Private AI or public AI tools: what should a UAE company commission?

By EnterpriseAI.ae

The short answer

Commission a private AI deployment when the work involves client files, patient records, financial data or anything a regulator or a contract says must stay under your control. Public AI tools are acceptable for general drafting and research that involves no confidential material. Many UAE companies end up with both, with a clear rule on which is used for what.

  • Private AI keeps prompts and documents on infrastructure you control
  • It can run on your own servers or in a UAE data centre
  • Regulated sectors usually need it for core work
  • A provider should size it from your real workload

What private AI means

A private AI deployment is an AI system that runs on infrastructure your company controls: your own servers, or dedicated capacity in a UAE data centre. Your staff use it like any AI assistant, but the questions they ask and the system is designed so that the documents they upload are not sent to an outside AI provider.

On-premise AI is the strictest form of this, where the hardware is in your own building or server room.

Who needs it

The companies that typically ask for private AI are law firms, clinics and hospital groups, financial and insurance firms, mortgage companies, and contractors working under confidentiality clauses. The common factor is that the documents belong to someone else, or a regulator has rules about where they go.

The UAE federal data protection law and the DIFC and ADGM regimes all put duties on how personal data is processed and transferred. Your legal adviser should confirm what applies to you. The consultant should design the system to fit.

What to ask a private AI provider

Before commissioning a private deployment, ask:

  • Which models will run, and are they licensed for commercial use?
  • How was the hardware sized, and on what workload?
  • Who has administrator access, and how is every question and answer logged?
  • How does the system connect to your document store and your user accounts?
  • Who updates the models and the software after launch?
  • What does the system do with Arabic documents?

Where public tools still fit

Public AI tools are useful for work with no confidential content. The risk is staff pasting client material into them because nothing better is available. A private assistant that is just as easy to use removes the reason to do that.

Questions on this topic

Short answers to what companies ask us next.

Ask us your own
Is private AI less capable than public AI tools?

For most business work, no. Open models hosted privately handle document reading, drafting, search and reporting well. The assessment tests the model on your own documents before you commit.

Can private AI run in a UAE data centre instead of our office?

Yes. Dedicated capacity in a UAE data centre keeps the data in the country without you owning the hardware. The right choice depends on your sector and your IT team.
